Activities

There's lots to do!

Nature.
Costa Rica is one of the most bio-diverse places on earth. With only one-hundredth of 1% of the earth’s surface, it is home to 5% of the earth’s species of plants and animals. It is estimated that there are 878 species of birds, 228 species of mammals and 175 species of amphibians.

Just on the property of Villas Escondrijo alone, we have seen two species of monkey (mantled howler and white-faced capuchin), coatimundi; two varieties of toucans, several types of parrots, geckos and many varieties of frogs.

A few minutes north of Dominical is the Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge and to the south is Rancho La Merced National Wildlife Refuge, both offering guided activities and opportunities to view nature up close.

The Beach.
The southern Pacific Coast has many stretches of sand where you will not find another person for as far as the eye can see. Professional lifeguards protect a portion of Dominical’s beach, internationally renowned for its surfing. There are coastline caves to explore, or just go for a swim in warm water right down the road in Dominicalito.

Fishing.
The waters off the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica boast some of the best fishing in the world. Off shore world-class sailfish and marlin fishing is available with local professional fishing charters. When inshore fishing, you will catch tuna, mackerel, red snapper and roosterfish. Schools of dolphin, that seem to enjoy playing tag with the boat and surfing the wake, often will escort you. Many of the Ticos fish from the shoreline, and one recently caught a near record 54 lb. snook at the mouth of the Baru River in Dominical.

Adventure.
There are so many activities to do we could not list them all …… here is a list of just some of them for the adventurous types:

  • Canopy Tours/Zip Lining
  • Waterfall Tours
  • Whale Watching
  • ATV/Quad Rentals
  • Horseback Riding
  • and….Endless walking, hiking, wildlife viewing, and more!

Dining & Nightlife.
From “sodas” (small Tico operated restaurants specializing in typical Costa Rican dishes) to gourmet fare in unusual, interesting or hidden places, the possibilities are abundant and varied. Restaurants are usually small and open air. One is never made to feel rushed – in fact, you may wish to learn the phrase “La cuenta, por favor” in order to have any hope of obtaining your bill. At Villas Escondrijo you will find information on a variety of places. Some come & go, ownership changes, so occasionally an open mind is required if you don’t receive quite what you were expecting. For those so inclined, you will find cantinas with karaoke, live music, dancing or just plain partying. On Friday nights during high season you may attend “Movies in the Jungle”, a unique open-air cinema showing classics, epics and sometimes, the obscure.
